After submitting their detailed written applications, shortlisted candidates were invited for interviews with our Vice Principal, Mr James Sweeney, and Chinese Co-Principal, Jessica Sun. This year, portions of the interview were conducted in Chinese, requiring the interviewees to switch swiftly between two languages.

在提交详细的书面申请之后，入围的候选人被邀请与外籍副校长Sweeney先生和华籍校长孙女士进行面试。今年部分面试采用中文，需要候选人在中英文面试无缝切换。

Our Vice Principal Mr Sweeney expresses pride in our scholarship programme, “Our scholarships recognise and reward those students who demonstrate excellence in creativity, critical thinking, academics, leadership, team spirit and in serving the school and its community. All our scholars are worthy recipients.”

我们的外籍副校长Sweeney对奖学金项目给予很大的肯定，“我们的奖学金认可并鼓励在创意、批判性思维、学术、领导力、团队协作和服务学校社群有卓越成就和贡献的学生。我们所有的获得者都值得这份鼓励。”

The YCIS Beijing scholarship programme spans far beyond academic excellence; it reveals the students’ clear motivation to have an impact in this world. This was clearly observed by our Co-Principal Jessica Sun who shares her personal feelings about the interview process with the students, “I was impressed by the students' confidence, courage and how well they articulated their strengths and passion. I was touched by their enthusiasm towards our school life and learning. I even wish that I would have had this kind of ambition when I was in Secondary school.”

北京耀中奖学金项目不仅奖励学术成绩优秀的学生，它还反映了学生为世界带来改变的明确动机。这也切合我们华籍校长孙女士的洞察，她跟我们分享面试学生过程中的个人感受，“同学们的自信、勇气和他们很好地表达自己如何发展特长和追求给我留下了深刻的印象。他们对学校生活和学习的热情让我很感动。我甚至希望自己在中学的时候能有像他们一样的抱负。”

This week we have invited Sara, Charlie, and Jaydon to share with us.

Sara Fernandez, Year 11 

 Madam Chang Tsor-Hang Scholarship Award

Sara Fernandez，十一年级，曾楚珩女士纪念奖学金

 “Change will only happen if we make decisions, which I aim to do.”

“只有在你做出决定的时候才会发生改变，这是我的目标。”

Sara lives and breathes community spirit. She has been ceaselessly committed to sustainability and giving back, whether it is to the planet, the wider community, or our school. Her projects and initiatives include removing disposable cups from the school, seeking cooperation with a plastic recycling company, as well as raising awareness in our community by writing environmental articles for the school magazine ‘Sting’. Being a role model as one of our student leaders, she cares about human rights and inequality. Sara lends a helping hand to those in need, whether through giving support to transitioning new students or organising fundraisers from start to finish for the Migrant Children’s Foundation. Sara has been a valuable member of our school community since 2015.

Sara的生活处处彰显社区精神。她持续不断地为地球、更大的社群和学校的可持续发展付出努力，并回馈到社区中。她的项目和发起的活动包括在校禁止使用纸杯，寻找和塑料回收公司的合作、为学校杂志《Sting》供稿环保相关文章来提高大家的环保意识。作为学校领袖之一的模范生，她关心人权和不平等问题。Sara在所需之处都能伸出援手，不管是通过帮助新生过渡或者是为农民工子弟基金会组织筹款。自2015年她加入耀中以来，她就是我们学校社群非常重要的成员。

Can you share your feelings about being awarded this scholarship?

Speechless. I found myself at a complete loss for words, overwhelmed with excitement, gratefulness, and questions about what this meant for me and my future. This truly feels like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and by no means did I imagine myself receiving this scholarship four years back when I first began applying. Most importantly, I do hope that by receiving this scholarship, new and younger students will gain the courage and reassurance they need to apply themselves for a scholarship and 'reach for the stars'.

无以言表。我发现自己激动得找不到词来表达我的不尽感激，同时也问自己这份荣耀对我及我的未来的意义。这很像一个千载难逢的机会，四年前当我第一次申请时，我绝不会想象到自己会获得这份殊荣。最重要的是，我希望通过收获这份奖学金让年轻的新生得到鼓励并确信––––他们需要为奖学金努力并且摘得这份闪闪发光的荣耀。

How will you make a difference to the school as a scholarship recipient?

作为一个奖学金获得者，你计划给学校带来怎样的改变？

As a scholarship recipient, I look forward to impacting our school's social and academic environment. I am eager to make an impact on our school's understanding of sustainability by further educating our students about this topic and by making our school more environmentally friendly. I wish to use this scholarship as my pathway to make bold yet necessary decisions to make our school a more conscious and self-aware environment.

作为奖学金获得者，我期待对学校的社交和学术环境带来改变。我十分渴望对我们学校可持续发展作出更深远的影响，可以通过进一步教育学生关于可持续发展这一主题和让我们变成一个更环保的学校来展开。我希望借助奖学金作为我的一个途径来做出的大胆且必要的决定，从而帮学校塑造一个更有觉知和自我意识的环境。

How will this scholarship impact your future development?

本个奖学金项目对你的未来发展会产生什么样的影响？

Through being awarded this scholarship I am given the opportunity and ability to achieve more and work even harder both academically and non-academically. I hope to join bigger and more significant projects, work with more organizations outside of school, and push myself further by achieving my university goals. Through this scholarship, I am also able to find and fit into a community inside our school where I am surrounded by students who have proven themselves to be hardworking and ambitious, with strengths that lie in areas in which I look to improve.

被授予这份殊荣，意味着我被赋予机会可以在学术和非学术领域取得更多的成果并且更努力。我期望加入更大更重要的项目，和更多校外的机构合作、帮助自己取得更多大学目标来推动自己。通过这份奖学金，我还可以找到并且融入学校的一个社群，社群中有我努力且抱负远大的同学们，他们有很多我要向他们学习的地方。

Charlie Leung, Year 11

 IB Award Scholarship

梁晓晴，十一年级，IB奖学金获得者

 “Academics will help us to get us where we want to go; however, it is the skills we develop that will stay with us in the long run.”

“学术会带领我们抵达我们想去的地方，然而我们学习的技能会长久跟随我们。”

Charlie has been a scholarship recipient for four consecutive years. She is a devoted member of the school’s volleyball team and has been elected next year’s team captain. Charlie is a sought-after guitar performer and emcee at formal school ceremonies and has also made an outstanding contribution as a vocalist at the 25th anniversary YCIS Beijing concert. Being a dedicated songwriter, she is also driven to motivate younger students in pursuing and finding their interests. As one of our student leaders, she organizes numerous activities and sports events to bring the school community closer together. Charlie has been a YCIS Beijing student for fourteen years.

梁晓晴连续四年获得奖学金。她是学校排球队的忠实队员，也是下一学年校排球队的队长。梁晓晴是一位非常受欢迎的吉他手、学校典礼的主持人、北京耀中25周年庆的歌手。同时，作为一个敬业的音乐词曲作者，她极力号召年轻的学生找到并追求他们的兴趣爱好。作为学生领袖之一，她组织了各式各样的活动和运动比赛把学校社群更紧密地联系在一起。值得一提的是，梁晓晴在北京耀中上了14年学！

How will you make a difference to the school as a scholarship recipient?

作为一个奖学金获得者，你计划给学校带来怎样的改变？

In the next academic semester, my intentions to contribute to the school in numerous aspects still stand out clearly. Focussing on sports, I look forward to working with next year's U19 volleyball team, working towards ISAC and ACAMIS achievements together. In addition, through student leadership, I aim to organise more teacher and student interactive activities to tie the community closer like this year’s Lip-Sync Battle in which students and staff all had fun performing. Furthermore, as an IB student next year, I plan to host more charity-based activities to support local charities that may be struggling due to pandemic complications, doing what is in my power to help them out.

下一学年，我的重心非常明确--继续投入到学校各个领域的活动中。首先专注于运动，我期待和下一学年的U19排球队，一起在国际学校运动会和中蒙国际学校协会取得成绩。与此同时，在学生领导力方面，我的目标是组织更多的师生互动活动来把这个社群联系得更紧密，比如今年的对口型假唱大赛， 学生和老师都很享受一起表演的过程。此外，明年我也将是一名IB学生，我计划组织更多的慈善活动来支持当地的慈善组织。慈善组织受疫情的影响，经营方面可能比较困难，我想尽我所能帮助他们。

How will this scholarship impact your future development?

I look at the scholarship as an indicator of not only my academic achievements but more importantly my activities within the school community. Regardless of the result of the scholarship, I would have used it to fuel my motivation to achieve better the following year. In addition, I recognised the value of the application process itself, giving me the chance to practice reflection and interview skills in a formal situation, gaining useful experiences I will use when applying for university.

奖学金对我来说不仅是对我学术成就的认可，更重要的也是我在学校参与的活动的认可。不管奖学金结果如何，我都会将其当成一个动力以在来年做得更好。另外，我意识到申请奖学金的过程本身给了我一个宝贵的机会，包括反思、练习正式场合下的面试技巧、获得申请大学的有用经验。 

What support do you receive from the school to develop and optimise your talents? 

学校给你什么样的支持，帮助你发展和最大限度发挥你的天分？

The school introduced me to volleyball when I was in Year 7 which ultimately led me to invest more into volleyball, for example joining a volleyball club, which contributed to me landing the position as captain for the next season. The school is very encouraging, especially towards younger students to join sports teams with the intention to gain valuable experience and explore different hobbies. My passion for volleyball started at YCIS Beijing. Other than sports, the school also encourages students to perform. Since Primary, I have been given many opportunities to be on stage which helped me grow as a performer, leading to my first gig outside of school this year during a charity market. The school is a safe place to try out different activities to ultimately provoke the growth of one or more hobbies.

在我七年级的时候，学校建议我参加校排球队，这也引导我投入更多的时间在排球练习上，例如，参加排球俱乐部，这在一定程度上帮助我下学年出任排球队队长。学校给予学生很多的鼓励，尤其是对于希望通过参加运动队来获得宝贵经验和探索不同兴趣爱好的低年级学生。我对排球的热爱就是在北京耀中开始的。除了运动，学校还鼓励学生表演，从小学开始我就有很多机会上台演出，这也帮助我成长为一个表演者、从而能在今年校外的一个慈善活动中开展自己的第一场现场演出。我们学校让我感到很安全和舒适，在这里你可以大胆地尝试不同的活动，从而最大化发展一个甚至更多的爱好。

Jaydon Chieng, Year 7

 Community Scholarship Award

詹畯，七年级，社区奖学金获得者

 “Good communication is the heart of great teamwork.”

“好的沟通是团队合作的灵魂。”

Jaydon has been with YCIS Beijing since 2012, starting in K2. He is well-rounded and an extraordinarily talented person excelling as a musician as well as an athlete. He is mastering mathematics competitions and coding challenges, next to being a prize-winning young writer. Music being one of his biggest passions, Jaydon plays five instruments, namely the piano, drums, violin, guitar, and bass guitar. He is a member of the school orchestra and the school band, “Dawn-Breakers”, embracing every opportunity to perform. Being a member of the student council, he takes initiative in helping and inspiring others, be it in the classroom or through engaging in charity work in and outside of the school.

詹畯2012年就到北京耀中国际学校上两岁班。他是个全面发展并且极具天赋的学生，他是个音乐家也是个运动员，在数学竞赛和编程竞赛也都能取得优异的成绩，接下来还有希望成为获奖的年轻作家！其中音乐是他最大的爱好，詹畯会五种乐器，包括钢琴、架子鼓、小提琴、吉他和贝斯吉他。他是学校管弦乐和学校乐队Dawn-Breakers的成员，每次有机会，他都积极参加到演出中。同时，作为学生委员会的成员，他发起活动帮助和启发他人，你可以在教室中抑或是校内外的慈善工作中看到他的身影。

How will you make a difference to the school as a scholarship recipient?

作为一个奖学金获得者，你计划给学校带来怎样的改变？

I am sincerely honoured to be awarded the Community Scholarship Award. As a scholarship recipient, I will continue to live up to and demonstrate the core values of YCIS. I want to continue to be part of the school’s Student Leaders and work with our teachers and fellow students to bring positive changes to the school community. I will strive to work harder, cultivate my critical thinking and leadership skills, be the best me and continue to be a role model of YCIS BJ to all in the learning community.

获得社区奖学金对我来说是份巨大的荣誉。作为奖学金获得者，我会继续不负众望并展示耀中的核心价值。我想继续当学校的学生领袖之一，与老师和同学一起给学校社群带来积极的变化。我会更努力学习、培养我的批判性思维和领导力，成为最好的自己的同时，也在所有学习社群中继续当北京耀中国际学校的模范学生。

How will this scholarship impact your future development?

本个奖学金项目对你的未来发展会产生什么样的影响？

I truly live up to the quote by Greek playwright Sophocles, “Without labour, nothing prospers.” Both motivation and this quote drive me to work towards my goals in life. Being awarded this scholarship has certainly given me a big boost that further motivates me to enhance my academic performance, my interest in mathematics, English literature, my passion in music, tennis and also computer programming. I am looking forward to working on another music project as well as deepening my knowledge in coding this coming summer. Just as how I have received, I plan to give back to the community through volunteering opportunities. Those reading this article and need a volunteer for their charitable projects, do reach out to me!

Can you share your feelings about being awarded this scholarship?

When I received the news, I was ecstatic. I feel blessed and am thankful that all the hard work and effort that I have put in over the past years have all come to fruition, and I am extremely grateful that the school recognises my performance in my academics and other areas through their scholarship programme. A big shout of thanks to all my teachers who have supported me through the scholarship process. As I also have two other siblings studying in YCIS BJ, this scholarship has allowed me to feel a strong sense of pride, as I am able to help my parents partially contribute to my own school fees for the next school year. I feel that that's quite an accomplishment for a 12 year old!

我收到消息的时候欣喜若狂。我觉得自己很幸运，也非常感谢自己在过去几年付出的所有努力开花结果；还要感谢学校通过授予奖学金对我的学术表现和其他领域的成就给予了认可；十分谢谢我所有的老师们，他们在我申请奖学金时给予我帮助。因为我还有两个弟弟妹妹在北京耀中上学，这份奖学金已经让我为自己感到万分骄傲，因为我可以帮助我的父母承担下个学年的部分学费。这对一个12岁的学生来说是个很大的成就！
